ADD AN INSURANCE CHECKUP TO YOUR SPRING
CLEANING
The road to warm weather, picnics in the park, and sunshine are on the way. Spring
is the season to clean out and renew yourself, your garden, and yes, your roof! Roof
maintenance and manicuring can often be overlooked, but it’s an important part
of keeping your house clean, happy, and safe. Below are a couple of important
steps to remember when cleaning up your roof.
CLEAN THOSE GUTTERS
Gutter cleaning is probably the most routine step of cleaning your roof, but not any
less important. Especially coming out of winter, there can be a lot of build up of
debri like dirt or leaves. April showers bring May flowers, but those showers can
cause roof and ceiling damage if the gutters cannot do their job properly.
CHECK THE AREA SURROUNDING YOUR ROOF
This one may be overlooked, but it’s as equally important to inspect the
surrounding area of your roof, like overgrown trees. Over hanging trees should be
trimmed to prevent wear and tear to your shingles, gutters, or in worse cases; a
damaged or dead tree limb falling onto your roof and causing more damage.
INSPECT SHINGLES FOR MOSS AND ALGAE
Did you know moss can lift shingles up and allows water and ice to get underneath
them? That’s why it’s important to expect your shingles to make sure they’re clean.
Also check for worn down, curled, or missing shingles. If you notice a fair amount of
shingles that are battered and beaten, it may be time to repair or replace your roof.
CALL THE PROFESSIONALS
While it may seem okay and safe to bring a buddy to spot/help you while
inspecting or cleaning your roof, it’s best to call up a trained professional. They can
thoroughly inspect your roof to make sure no part is left unseen or unrepaired.
INSURANCE CHECKUP
If the roof on your home is over 15 years old, regardless of how it looks, it’s somehow
affecting your insurance coverage in one way or another. Most companies either
increase the cost for the insurance of your roof, won’t pay for the entire cost to
replace it for hail or wind damage, or have a very large deductible for wind or hail
claims to your roof that you may not be aware of. Be sure to check with us to
understand how damages to your roof are covered as this has changed a lot over
the past few years with all of our insurance carriers and many people are not
aware of the changes. We’ll help you stay on “TOP” of things…
