Tax-efficient strategies using various alternative solutions

How much are you paying in taxes today? Are you concerned about how much you might owe in the future?

To help manage the impact of taxes on your investment portfolio, generally there are
solutions with one of three different types of tax treatment.

  1. Tax-free solutions:  This bucket generally consists of investments and insurance using after-tax dollars for tax-free growth. Earnings can be federally income tax-free, provided certain conditions are met.
  2. Taxable solutions:  This bucket consists of accounts funded with after-tax money for taxable income, such as interest when earned, dividends when paid or capital gains or losses when realized.
  3. Tax-deferred solutions:  This bucket includes savings vehicles funded with either pre-tax or after-tax contributions. Tax-deferred earnings and pre-tax contributions are not taxed until withdrawn. Amounts withdrawn prior to age 59½ may also be subject to a 10% early withdrawal penalty. Generally, distributions from qualified accounts are required to begin at age 72.

While you are probably aware of some of the more popular tax-advantaged accounts, like a 401(k) or an IRA, you might not know about other tax-deferred or tax-free options that are available to you.
