How to Clean Your Refrigerator

Selected content image

Your refrigerator is your kitchen workhorse. It is one

of the hardest working appliances in your home and

the one that is never able to rest. And, while subject to

spills and overcrowding and also sometimes housing

expired items, your refrigerator is likely covered in

more germs than you realize. Take these steps to

deep clean your fridge, and then repeat seasonally.

To deep clean:

  1. Remove all contents of the refrigerator and dispose of any that are expired.
  2. Remove all shelves and drawers; then, hand wash with warm water and dish soap.
  3. For non-removable refrigerator components and interior walls, mix baking soda and water (1:7) and wipe down surfaces. Remove baking soda mixture with a damp cloth.
  4. Clean door seals with warm water and dish soap. Dry thoroughly with a clean cloth.
  5. Ensure all components are completely dry before reassembling.

Additionally, here are some tips on creating habits that will ensure your refrigerator stays sparkling:

  1. Mix equal parts of vinegar and water and spray on spills or sticky spots. Keep this in a labeled spray bottle in the refrigerator for easy access.
  2. Immediately throw away any items that you suspect to be spoiling.
  3. Place items that may leak — such as defrosting meat or berry cartons — on a rimmed plate.
  4. Activated charcoal, coffee grounds cat litter and baking soda are all items said to eliminate odors. Place a small amount in a dish and leave uncovered in the fridge until the smell is gone.
